Russian gas exports to Greece hit record levels
10/12/2004
Russia plans to increase its gas exports to Greece after the two parties re-affirmed commitments to furthering their energy relationship when president Vladimir Putin met with Greek prime minister Costas Caramanlis yesterday.
Alexei Miller, chairman of Gazprom, said that Russia would supply a record 2 Bcm of gas to Greece this year and added that both countries have contracts through to 2016. Most of the gas is used for power generation.
Vladmir Putin said also that Russia would increase its gas exports to Greece though no figures were given as to how much. Greece is an important partner in pushing forward the trans-Balkan oil pipeline that would allow Russia to bypass Turkey.
According to Russian media, Greece imports 80% of its gas supplies from Russia, and buys the rest from Algeria.
