Hungary - Gas Distribution Companies and Pipelines
28/01/2000
Hungary’s pipeline network is about 5,000 km long, with a comparatively large number of off-take points: MOL transfers gas to the regional distribution companies at almost 400 “city gates”.
The high-pressure grid is interconnected with Ukraine’s Brotherhood transit pipeline, which carries Russian gas to Hungary for internal consumption and exports to the former Yugoslavia, by way of border points with Bosnia and Serbia. The capacity of the pipeline is 11.3 Bcm/year.
Since October 1996, the Hungarian grid has been interconnected with the western European grid via the Hungary-Austria Gas (HAG) pipeline between Gyor in Hungary and Baumgarten in Austria. The 4.4 Bcm/year pipeline is 120 km long, of which 70 km is on Hungarian territory.
The regional distribution companies have a network of 48,800 km, supplying 2.6 million customers in 1,528 municipalities. It is anticipated that connections will total 3 million in 2000.
