European Gas Price Trends

There were few changes in European gas prices between July and August except for interruptible prices which rose significantly in Belgium, France and Italy. Because of the immediate link to heavy fuel oil prices in Italy, interruptible prices rose by 3-4%. The rises in Belgium and France were rather less, 1-2%, because of the time lag in the link to fuel oil.

In the UK the upward trend in average prices continued but not by nearly as much as the graphs show. Because we show our prices in pfennings, the UK figures show rises that are mainly due to currency effects of the strong pound. In fact, the rise in average UK prices was of the order of 1%.
